Can humans take pet CBD oil?

CBD oil for humans and their pets?

I know there's usually this temptation to reach for your pet's CBD oil when you can't find yours or probably when you've run out of CBD, or sometimes you might feel the urge to allow your animal friend to consume your CBD. This behavior has somehow become quite regular amongst CBD users in the United States that own pets.

Due to the close bond between most Americans and their household pet, there are so many cases of humans using their pet's CBD. Even though CBD companies distinguished pet CBD products from human CBD products, humans still find themselves lurking around their pet's food shelf, which often feels like eating pet food.

However, the primary concern amongst people is if consuming these CBD products made for pets is safe? If the labeling doesn't matter, or there's a significant difference between human CBD and pet CBD? And some pet owners also wonder if they can indulge their pet in the human CBD without their pet suffering an extreme side effect?

In this post, I'll be sorting out answers to these various concerns.

Is CBD Safe for Human Consumption?

There's no direct answer to this question, no matter how many times it gets asked in forums, groups, blogs, websites, etc.; this can be blamed on the FDA's poor regulatory policy of hemp. The absence of scientific evidence to support the claimed benefits of CBD has thrown so much doubt on hemp-derived substances.

Although there might not be any official statement by the Food and Drug Administration to verify the safety of consuming CBD, various studies and research and clinical trials have been carried out on CBD by different scientists. However, this testing of CBD's properties and its effects on the human body was carried out on small scales. These tests had positive test results and showed little to no side effects.

What is CBD? CBD is the short form for Cannabidiol. A cannabinoid (cannabinoid is a natural chemical compound that interacts with the body and brain when it enters the bloodstream); comes from the cannabis plant. However, unlike its counterpart, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is responsible for the "high" effect of marijuana.

CBD derived from the hemp plant is non-intoxicating and is filled with lots of health benefits. Despite the controversies surrounding CBD, it's proven compatible with the human body system, as there have been no reports of any lethal adverse effects caused by CBD consumption. The absence of intoxicating substances in CBD makes it generally safe to use in any setting. Its natural components filled with medicinal benefits make it very safe for humans to consume.

So, Yes. CBD is safe for human consumption. But suppose you have a serious health condition. In that case, it's advisable to consult your doctor before using hemp-derived products to treat any health situation because the FDA poorly regulates CBD.

Is Pet CBD the Same as Human CBD?

Yes, there is, and no, there isn't. There is no difference in the way the oils are manufactured. However, based on the Food and Drug Administration standards, CBD oil intended for humans usually requires different labeling from those intended for animals.

The oils are typically identical, although the distinguishing difference would be that some companies might add special flavoring for animals, like bacon or beef flavor for dogs, or a chicken or salmon taste for a cat, which may not go down well with a human. CBD for pets is often paired with a carrier such as cod liver oil or olive oil, which can improve the health and well-being of your pet.

Animals, on the other hand, may probably not like an artificial flavor because of the unique blends of terpenes (terpenes are the chemical compounds that are responsible for a variety of CBD tastes). Terpenes have distinct scents and flavors, which might not be appetizing to an animal.

Based on observation, how the cannabinoid CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system of both humans and animals is very similar. Endocannabinoid and cannabinoid receptors are found throughout the entire body of both humans and animals. All animals, vertebrates, and invertebrates (except certain aquatic beings) are known to have an ECS. Due to the presence of the ECS in our pets, it's been observed that CBD affects our pets almost the same way it affects us.

According to a study, The ECS performs the same functions in both humans and pets. The functions:

  • Balance and coordination
  • Appetite
  • Digestive system function
  • Mood regulation
  • Memory
  • Muscle movement

Note: What affects a human's ECS may also affect a pet's ECS. When a change occurs in your pet's endocannabinoid system, your pet can experience suppressed function in any of these processes.

A crucial difference would be the mg dosage for humans and pets. A pet CBD oil is specially manufactured with pets in mind; their CBD usually contains a lower amount of mg, unlike humans'. The contents of human CBD are stronger than that of pets and sometimes contain essential oils not included in a pet's CBD.

Can I Take My Pets CBD oil?

Yes, if the ingredient's quality is great. However, you should also observe that the product doesn't have any other strange additives in it. These additives may not be harmful to the human body. But, if the CBD oil was specially formulated for pets, it's probably best to avoid it.

Another potential concern about these additives for humans is that those meant for pets are usually flavored to entice animals to eat them without complaint. CBD oil for humans is often pure and unflavored. Traditionally it has an earthy flavor, so many manufacturers introduce an animal-friendly flavor to the oil. It can be unpalatable for humans to digest.

CBD is generally safe. It is well tolerated by both humans and animals and is easily metabolized by our bodies. It is almost impossible to overdose on CBD. When taken at a sufficiently high dose, CBD will cause the body to feel drowsy. Both you and your pet will sleep off!

In very few cases, taking an excessive amount of CBD may result in diarrhea. However, this is incredibly rare, and CBD is commonly known as a non-toxic compound. This means it doesn't result in any serious side effects and is well tolerated by the mammalian body system.

You may find yourself leaning towards your pet's CBD when yours is finished because of humans' CBD being a lot more expensive than pet CBD because of the high standards, the financial and practical burden put on CBD companies to meet. However, It is usually advised to consult your doctor if you decide to take your pet's CBD. A precautionary measure to make sure that it does not have negative interactions with any medication you may be taking.

Can My Pet Take Human CBD?

Due to CBD's non-lethal and non-toxic nature, animals can consume human CBD without fearing any extreme side effects. However, some key factors determine how safe it is to feed your pet, your CBD. Factors like product quality and labeling play a key role in deciding if your pet can indulge in your CBD.

However, dosing is an extremely crucial factor when giving your pet human CBD. Currently, there is no official standardized dosing chart for pets or humans. But based on Morgan's recommendation, "1 milligram per 10 pounds of body weight. If using human CBD oil, you will need to figure out how many milligram of CBD are in a milliliter of the oil you have. There are about 30 milliliters in 1 fluid ounce, which is a common CBD oil bottle size. For example, one 30 milliliter bottle contains 500 milligrams of CBD, and a standard dropper usually holds 1 milliliter. Some quick math can help you figure out the most effective dosage.

Simply divide the milligrams of CBD by the amount of oil in the bottle. In this example, each milliliter, or full dropper, should have about 16.6 milligrams of CBD."

Note: When it comes to CBD dosage, always begin with the lower side, and do not forget, it's one milligram per 10 pounds of body weight, not one dropper full.

    Finally

Both parties may interchange each other's CBD with little to no consequences at all. Humans are most likely not to feel any side effects after consuming pet CBD oil, but that may not be the case for animals like it is with humans. CBD has a stronger content, and animals have a complex dosing chart that varies among different animals.

Most CBD products for pets usually contain a lower concentration of CBD as compared to products for humans. This is to avoid a drowsy effect on them; a slightly higher dose of CBD could cause stomach problems and possibly cause diarrhea. Even though these effects are temporary, you should avoid exposing your pets to heavy doses. The best way to achieve the exact dosage limits for your pets is to match it with their size and weight.
