The relationship between alcohol and CBD oil hasn't yet been extensively studied, but we've got a couple of preclinical studies to draw on.  The Journal of Psychopharmacology found few differences between subjects who consumed both alcohol and CBD and those who consumed just alcohol.

Based on this discovery, you can expect alcohol to affect you in a similar way when you consume it alongside CBD oil.  It's quite unfortunate that there's not enough info to say whether cannabidiol can decrease the risk of harmful side effects one consumes alcohol.

Can CBD oil harm the liver?

The incredible health potential of CBD is still the subject of many studies, but the potentially negative effects also need to be elucidated to get the most out of CBD oil and prevent unwanted reactions. Various debates about the harmful effects of CBD oil on the liver are still ongoing.

A study published in the Molecules Journal confirms the relationship between CBD oil and impaired liver function. For the study, the scientists used mice. The experiment consisted of two stages. In the first stage, the mice were given a single dose of CBD (20, 60, 200 mg/kg). In the second step, the mice were administered with CBD extract (61.5, 184.5, 615 mg/kg) for ten days.

The results of the study showed that although CBD was well tolerated, the mice given the highest doses evident evidence of liver toxicity. That being said, repeated administration of lower doses has caused swelling and damage to the liver.

Scientists explain that CBD, when taken orally as a concentrated cannabis extract rich in CBD, has the potential to induce liver damage. In acute toxicity or the first stage of the study, the highest dose of CBD caused hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity), demonstrated by a significant increase in parameters associated with this condition, such as bilirubin, ALT, AST, and others. The subacute toxicity or the second stage of the study also showed that the toxicity was, to some extent, mediated by liver injury.

One of the most interesting findings of this study is that a multitude of molecular responses was induced by CBD. Hepatotoxicity has been associated with the deregulation of more than 50 genes. Scientists concluded their research that despite the positive effects of CBD in treating seizures and other health problems, it still poses a risk of liver injury.

Not only that, but the likelihood of developing this problem seems to be drugged up. Of course, scientists are calling for more research on this topic to further inspect the underlying mechanisms.

It's worth mentioning that a 200 mg dose is not applicable in most cases, this study gives a clear picture of what to expect when a person takes excessively high doses or overdoses.

I take CBD oil regularly, should I be concerned?

If you take CBD oil regularly, you are probably concerned now and wondering if your liver is at risk as well. While the study confirmed the relationship between CBD and liver damage, you shouldn't panic.

However, the aforementioned study is a red flag to many people who tend to think that the more CBD they take, the better results. It's not always the case. Taking too much could cause more harm than benefit. High doses can cause toxicity which also occurs with other drugs.
