CBN vs. CBD

Cannabinoids are hemp plants with the ability to alter receptors within the body. While cannabis and marijuana are also hemp plants, they vary based on the amount of THC present in them. Researchers found that Cannabis plants are hemp with about 0.3 THC or less present, while marijuana is one with more than 0.3 percent of THC present.

The cannabis plant has been a research subject, making the news over the years as the line between safe and unsafe has been questioned. It has been found that there are more than 100 cannabinoids, each with its unique difference in structure and function. The cannabis hemp plants have aided the research of compound cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, CBC, CBN, THC, and many more other compounds of different cannabinoids from the cannabis hemp plant.

In recent times, medicinal, therapeutic, and healthy uses of cannabinoids have made them a top topic of discussion when it comes to their legality and use.

What are Cannabinoids

Researchers have discovered that cannabinoids are chemicals associated with the cannabis plant, having the ability to alter certain receptors (cb1 and cb2) in the body known as the endocannabinoid system.

These cannabinoids found to alter receptors have come to play a critical role in medicinal and treatments. The compounds like CBD and CBN each have benefits as well as side effects. CBD is cannabidiol, while CBN is cannabinol. While they are sometimes mistaken, these two are very different from each other.

What is the Relationship Between CBD and CBN

While these two are most times mistaken for one another, there is a clean-cut difference between these two cannabinoids- CBD/CBN.

According to healthline.com, a health and wellness website, CBD is the second most common cannabinoid found in the cannabis hemp plant and is much easier to find compared to CBN, which is a product of oxidation on THC (Having some of its properties as well).

Since CBD is also effective in the treatment of rare epilepsy cases, it has been approved for use by the FDA. CBN, on the other hand, has not been approved to treat any condition.

Potential benefits of CBD

CBD

The effects of CBD are confirmed to be non-psychoactive, and non-intoxicating unlike the effects of THC and marijuana. This means that CBD products do not affect the senses to the point of highness.

CBD can be used in the treatment of health conditions involving pain and anxiety

According to the results of a Brazilian study in 2019, researchers found that out of several people who were placed on varying dosages of cannabidiol CBD, those with an average dosage were found to have reduced anxiety reports.

CBD products have proven to be highly effective in the treatment of people with sleep disorders, pain relief, and anxiety. Researchers have deduced that the CBD effect on the endocannabinoid system is said to be responsible for reducing chronic pain in the body.

CBD can be used in the treatment of cancer

Not only does it help to reduce the pain and nausea of cancer patients, but it has also been found that CBD possesses anticancer benefits that slow the process of cancer growth.

Treatment of neurogenerative diseases

CBD has shown potential benefits in the treatment of neurogenerative diseases and treatment of seizures. It has been found to have a good safety profile for use for medical and therapeutic purposes. It is effective in the treatment of neuro-related conditions like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Epilepsy, etc.

Regulates the adverse effects of THC

It can regulate the adverse effect of THC, known as the "entourage effect."

It improves sleep quality

A study has shown that CBD medications and dosage helps people sleep better. In research carried out by Dr. Scott, it was found that sleep quality can be improved with a daily dosage of CBD for a month.

Potential benefits of CBN

Acts as a strong sedative

Unlike CBD, high CBN possesses THC properties (psychoactive cannabinoids). Although both are cannabis compounds, CBN has a mild psychoactive effect and can act as a strong sedative. CBN is a more potent sedative when used in a combination of CBN and THC.

It has sleep/relief properties

Combining CBN and CBD will give a stronger sleep/pain relief medication.

Neuroprotective treatment

High levels of CBN may have a strong effect on neuro-based conditions. While this has been confirmed on a rat study, it has not been verified safe for humans.

Anti-inflammatory

CBN found in the industrial hemp known as cannabis is also relevant in the treatment of inflammations caused by arthritis.

CBD and CBN: Differences between the two cannabinoids

The cannabis plant (Cannabis Sativa) is cultivated to increase the amount of CBD produced. CBN, even though being a molecule of cannabinoid( also found in cannabis), is not so easily gotten. Even though different, research has shown that neither of these cannabinoid compounds can be intoxicating on their own without combining with THC.

Potential side effects

The cannabis hemp plant (due to its difference in THC levels); CBD is relatively safe compared to other cannabinoids; It has a safety profile, certified by the FDA. However, it comes with its share of side effects, though minimal compared to other cannabinoids found in the cannabis hemp plant. Effects like diarrhea, nausea can be noticed.

Though CBD has non-intoxicating effects of CBN THC, it has been known to act as an appetite stimulant and play a vital role in weight change. High CBD usage, especially when mixed with other medications, has different side effects altogether. These include liver damage.

CBD is also the primary cannabidiol produce used in the regulation of the entourage effect. CBN is, however, not associated with any side effects at the moment.

This is not because the CBN cannabinoid compounds are 100% safe but because it has not been researched well enough to be discovered. Increased levels of THC CBN produce its intoxicating effects by an interaction between cb2 receptors and THC cannabinoid.

Economic and medical implications

While THC CBD is highly effective in treatments and medications, it is of high importance that the medium at which they are produced is strictly regulated, including the enforcement of a farm bill. Research has shown that the use of CBD should be regulated and only be used in recreational and medical settings on the condition that it has no trace of THC CBD cannabinoid.

Regulations around each compound are important as more research is being carried out to determine the position of each compound medically and economically. Although not as much study has gone into CBN and how the high levels of CBN could affect a person medically, it remains a cannabinol compound with promise for many medical procedures and treatment.

Conclusion

Both compounds are very important to the discovery of effective treatments and therapeutic procedures in neuro-related conditions and other diseases associated with the sensory system of the body.

As more and more scientific work is put into understanding the basis of these compounds, especially CBN, and their medical, legal, and economic effects, we have hopes for modern treatments and procedures that are equally effective and safe. The use of products gotten from these two compounds should be used as recommended by a doctor or physician.
