Does CBD help with menstrual cramps

by Edward J. Ross

Menstrual cramps can be so discomforting for women. Whether mild or severe, most women would rather not deal with the pain and discomfort that comes with their monthly period. While some women experience these painful menstrual cycles, some others do not. Some women even experience cramps that could disrupt their normal daily activities. This discomfort has led most women to search for solutions that will ease their period pain. CBD has been said to be of help.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the active ingredients of marijuana. Independently, it is said to be very beneficial to health. It has been very effective in issues like epilepsy, anxiety, and some believe it can serve as pain relief to chronic pain. Though people have questioned the safety of CBD's use due to its major side effects like irritability, nausea, and fatigue, CBD still proves as an essential substance to human health.

Contrary to certain assumptions, CBD does not make one high or feel euphoric or sedated, especially when used separately without any mixture with other substances. Though a small percentage of people may disagree due to they react differently to CBD. Before we elaborate on what role CBD plays on menstrual cramps, let's garner a bit more knowledge on CBD and menstrual cramps.

CBD Explained

CBD is a chemical extracted from the cannabis Sativa plant. This cannabis Sativa contains different compounds called cannabinoids, of which cannabidiol (CBD) is a part. The body has a large number of cannabinoid receptors that naturally-occurring compounds called endocannabinoids attach themselves to. These receptors are CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CBD is one of the popular cannabinoids in marijuana. The second one, which is responsible for marijuana's psychoactive 'high' is the Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Both THC and CBD can serve as anti-inflammatory agents as well as relieving pains. Studies have also shown that THC and CBD in treating inflammatory joint disorders. CBD is a natural substance taken for consumption to attain the feeling of calmness.

Types of CBD

Some research says that there are CBD products we're using that may contain a combination of CBD and THC, and when used together, it produces what is known as an entourage effect. Therefore, it is really important to take into consideration the types of CBD;

There are three types;

  1. Isolate: this contains cannabidiol without other compounds
  2. Full-spectrum: this contains all cannabinoids and also have compounds such as fatty acids, chlorophyll, fiber, terpenes, flavonoids, and proteins
  3. Broad-spectrum: this contains multiple cannabinoids without THC

What is Menstruation?

Menstruation, which is also called period, or menses, is the shedding of the womb's lining that occurs monthly. The menstrual cycle is 28 days long, which is counted from the first day of one's menstrual cycle to the first day of their next period. The cycle ranges between 21 days to 35 days, and not consistently 28 days. Knowing the exact number of days in one's cycle is hard, so be patient when studying yours.

Period Pain

This pain occurs in the pelvic region of the body, which can be the abdomen. It can occur as spasms or a tightening pressure. The pain can occur in the belly as a stomach upset, in the back, inner thighs, and hips. Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, is a medical term. It is a mild or severe pain experienced in females' lower belly before and during their menstruation. Menstrual cramps before the period are seen as one of the symptoms of PMS.

Symptoms of Menstrual Cramps

  • Pain in the belly
  • Pain in the lower backs and hips
  • Pressure feeling in the belly and pelvic area

Other symptoms associated with menstrual cramps are;

Causes of Period pain

Every month, there are contractions of the muscles in the uterus that causes its lining to shed. The hormone prostaglandin is triggered for these contractions to occur. Period pain and inflammation are a result of these contractions.

Some underlying medical conditions can also be responsible for period pain; conditions like uterine fibroids, cervical stenosis, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID), and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

  • Uterine Fibroids: This is a condition that involves abnormal growths that originates in the womb. It can be found during a pelvic exam.
  • Cervical stenosis: This condition is the closing up of the passageway through the cervix that prevents the menstrual flow.
  • Endometriosis: This is a condition whereby the tissue that should normally line inside the womb grows outside. It is a painful disorder.
  • Adenomyosis: This is when the endometrium (which is the tissue that lines the uterus) breaks through and grows into the womb wall.
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): This is experienced before the actual period starts, that is, before bleeding starts. It occurs in between ovulation and menstruation. It is said to be caused by low hormone levels.

Pain Relief for Menstrual

Painful periods can be reduced through two methods, namely;

  1. Natural methods
  2. The use of conventional drugs
Natural methods: These are several home treatments to relieve painful periods better. These natural remedies include; massaging the abdomen, using a heating pad, having warm baths, regularly exercising, practicing yoga and other relaxation techniques, consumption of vitamins and supplements (such as vitamin B-6, vitamin B-1, vitamin E, omega fatty acids, magnesium, and calcium), eating nutritious meals and reduction in the intake of caffeine, sugar & alcohol. People see CBD products as a natural alternative.

The use of conventional drugs: These entail the use of anti-inflammatory drugs and some pain relievers. Many people use NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and celecoxib. These are drugs that can lighten heavy bleeding. They pose no threat to the liver. This brews the question, 'what is the strongest medicine for menstrual cramps?

Is CBD good for Menstrual cramps?

Bearing in mind that the muscle contractions of the uterus causes pain and inflammation, and knowing that CBD serves as an anti-inflammatory agent and a pain relief, this should answer the question of whether CBD is good for menstrual cramps.

Research has shown that CBD works with the body endocannabinoid system (ECS) to help regulate inflammation. When the ECS and CBD interact, a great deal of pain is reduced. CBD products like CBD oil and balm help with muscle relaxation when applied to massage affected parts of the body.

CBD Oil

CBD is produced in different forms like gummies, oral pills, creams & balms, and oils and tinctures. Extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and dissolving it in oil like a hemp seed oil results in CBD oil. Many CBD products, especially oils, are made from industrial hemp. It comes in various strengths and is used in several ways. A doctor is better positioned to give details on how it should be used or the dose to be taken.

Nora CBD oil

Using CBD oil has proven to be beneficial to several aspects of a person's health. According to research conducted in 2018, the use of CBD oil says its benefits to the body cover several ailments like sleep disorders, nausea, allergies, epilepsy, lung conditions, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), migraine, joint and chronic pain. This oil can improve the digestive system, which in turn would help fight back against cramps. CBD oil has been compared to tincture many times, but while the former is made with oil, the latter involves the soaking of cannabis in alcohol and water.

Factors to consider when buying CBD products

Quality

First, the product's quality is a very vital factor to consider when purchasing it. Reviews and comments of past and existing users should help you with the knowledge about the product's quality. High-quality products should be what you get.

Safety

How safe is the product? This is another important factor that I feel should be considered. People react differently. It is crucial to find out if there is any ingredient that may cause allergic reactions. Also, there is a need to know where cannabis was grown to ensure it is legal. United states grown cannabis can be accepted.

Doctor and Manufacturer's Recommendation

Doctors and manufacturers have better knowledge about the products and can recommend the appropriate ones with high quality. They have the best say and know what would really work for you. They know trusted brands and the best dose to take. A doctor will have a better say in the brand that would be perfect for your body system.

Type of CBD

The particular type of CBD should be considered before going to get the product. Does one need to isolate, full-spectrum or broad-spectrum? Find the brands that offer the type of CBD you're interested in.

Conclusion

The role CBD plays in the health sector says a lot about its importance. Many have seen its work in soothing menstrual cramps. It is advisable to record your reaction to any brand of CBD, whether negative or positive, and consult with your doctor to find a suitable brand that will support your body system.
